NYC Firefighter Rift

In Greenwhich, New York City, a rift has developed between the volunteer and professional sections of a downtown firestation. As Greenwichtime.com reports:

The heads of two volunteer fire companies are seeking an apology from Fire Chief Peter Siecienski for publicly referring to them as “thugs” in front of dozens of firefighters

This is an ample demonstration of the problems that can arise when volunteers work alongside professionals and differences in aims, standards, and working practises cause problems. The head of the volunteer unit said that Siecienskis remarks were:

“representative of the culture that exists between the paid fire administration and the volunteers”
